Chapter Six

Eric

The ghosts felt my vulnerability. They tear at me from all sides as I sit in the darkened cottage on my knees, my arms curled over my head. I try to block out the sounds of their screaming, of their threats, of their pleading for help, but my emotional state is too raw.

I’m choking back tears, replaying the moment over and over again where I held my heart out to Cat, and she crushed it. This is one of the worst moments in my life. It’s as if every word my father ever spoke, about me being too weak to be an alpha, about me being useless, is right.

I am too weak. If one tiny woman can break me with just her words.

The volume of the ghosts increases, and I find myself screaming at them, shouting until my voice is raw, all to tune out the sound of their words. My chest hurts. Not just aches, but feels like someone reached inside of me and tore out my heart.

And then, suddenly, soft hands touch me.

I’m trembling when I pull my hands away from my ears and look up, already knowing by the silence of the ghosts who it is, even if I didn’t know by the feel of her hands, or by her sweet scent. Cat. She’s here. Her hands on my knees, her expression worried.

Cat who doesn’t love me and doesn’t want to be with me.

“Go!” I say. “I don’t need you!”

Her eyes widen, and she draws her hands back. Instantly, I miss her touch.

“Isha is here.”

My heart races. I don’t want to deal with him now. I don’t think I can handle watching her walk away with him.

I think it might kill me.

“Eric?” There’s concern in my name.

“I’m fine,” I grate out, then stand, my knees shaking.

I start toward the door.

“The book told me that your fathers funded the experiments that made me and that you four were the ones who sent the team to collect my brother.”

A cold chill moves down my spine as I turn around. “Is that what you think? Is that why you destroyed me?”

She looks torn between fear and anger as she stares at me. “Aaron says parts of it are true, but I don’t exactly feel like I can trust anything you guys say to me right now.”

My hands ball into fists. “That book’s job was to plant doubts in your mind. Hell, it was probably bespelled to! And it looks like it worked. But you know what, if you can believe it so easily, maybe I don’t need you!”

She tilts her chin up, but there’s uncertainty in her eyes. “Then who would chase away your ghosts?”

I scoff at her. “I prefer what the ghosts do to me than what you do to me!”

Turning around, I throw open the cottage door. The sound of the bells ringing suddenly seems to surround us. Had I really been so upset I didn’t hear them?

Cat is beside me an instant later. “I’m not going with Isha.
